Marlin Marine is a wholly South African company based in
Durban. From humble beginnings in 1995, it now supplies various underwater
imagine and lighting systems. Initially aimed at the recreational diving market,
our customer base now includes the commercial diving industry and, to a limited
degree, the military.
The dismal exchange rate over the last 15 years has resulted in only wealthier
divers being able to afford underwater photographic equipment. This is where we
have filled the gap.
Produced locally, from local materials, our products are firstly affordable and
secondly, are designed and built specifically for our harsh African environment.
Many imported products are too complex, too costly and simply not tough enough
to withstand abuse, specially in the diving industry.
Initially concentrating on video housings and their lighting requirements, we
found there was a similar need for efficient, reliable, powerful dive torches.
We now supply various models to the inland and coastal diver. In the last
+/- 3 years, digital cameras have become more prolific and
affordable and, subsequently, an increasing proportion of our work now covers
digital still cameras and their accompanying lighting systems.
With so many different still and video cameras on the market, our strength lies
in that we custom build each and every housing. From professional 3-chip video
cameras, various palmcorders, high-end digital still cameras and compact
point-and-shoots, we design a housing around the specific need.
The recreational market is our primary market and most local dive shops either
stock or recommend our products. We also supply end users in America, Australia,
UK, Israel, Mauritius and the Netherlands. The recent deep exploration of the
Oceanos was documented using Marlin Marine video and lighting systems.
All Marlin Marine products are machined from solid engineering plastic billet,
using stainless steel fixings throughout. Each and every housing is
pressure-tested (wet) to a depth of 76m for one hour, and at 25m for 12 hours,
but are regularly used to 120m by tech divers. All staff at Marlin Marine are
divers who regularly dive, using, testing and advancing our ever increasingly
diverse range of equipment.
